Hartford, April 27, 2026

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced that it would soon run out of funds that were being utilized to pay the salaries of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers as the government shutdown enters its third month. In early April, President Trump announced that DHS could access the emergency funds reserved under the “One Big Beautiful Bill” for this purpose. As this threat once again looms over TSA officers and their families, two Hartford-based non-profit organizations -The Brook’s Token and Connecticut Foodshare, have stepped in to provide resources like meals, gas, groceries, and donations to help lessen the strain caused during these uncertain times.

Located in Downtown Hartford, The Brook’s Token organized “Operation 280”, to deliver groceries, gas gift cards, toiletries, personal care items, diapers, formula, and a catered lunch to TSA agents at Bradley International airport on April 14.

Emily Santos, Administrative Assistant at The Brook’s Token credits their CEO for taking this initiative. She said,  “Our CEO raised questions about the TSA staff working and not being paid. She reached out to Bradley Airport to seek answers on how we could support them financially and relieve some of the burden.”

The non-profit is known to help individuals and families impacted by fire, incarceration, or other life-changing events by providing housing, resources, and support. However, it has also been at the forefront of organizing initiatives such as “Operation Token” which provided hot meals and beverages for families affected by the lapsed SNAP benefits during the government shutdown last year.

Brook’s Token prides itself on its outreach efforts. With many local TSA agents in need of immediate sustenance, delivering hot meals, clothes, shoes, and hygiene products is just the beginning. The non-profit looks to help anyone and everyone they come in contact with, including TSA agents in need.

Santos said that they are trying to help as many TSA agents as they can. “The goal behind it was to support the TSA staff during this difficult time, supply them with basic human needs like groceries and gas cards, and help ease the financial burden,.” she added.

Connecticut Foodshare is another organization contributing to these efforts across the state with more than 110 mobile food pantry sites. The organization has a widespread distribution network that has reached out to TSA agents and their families in their time of need.

Ayah Galal, the External Relations Manager for Connecticut Foodshare, said, “As TSA employees went without pay, Connecticut Foodshare distributed 3,500 pounds of food each week to TSA employees at Bradley International Airport and more than 700 pounds of food weekly to TSA employees at Tweed New Haven Airport. These deliveries include essential items like potatoes, onions, peanut butter, pasta, sauce, chicken soup, shelf-stable milk, and tuna—helping ensure individuals and families have reliable access to nutritious food during that difficult time.”

The non-profit has partnered with the Living Word Outreach Church in Hartford to distribute groceries to TSA agents. Utilizing the East Hartford mobile food pantry, Connecticut Foodshare and Living Word Church have been able to support over 700 households and distribute 14,350 pounds of groceries since last month.

Galal said, “Their (Living Word Church) fantastic team is made up of dedicated church staff and Connecticut Foodshare volunteers who sign up individually through our website. We also organized emergency food distributions for TSA workers when the government shut down in October 2025. We remain committed to stepping up when the community needs us most."

The support is unwavering during these vulnerable times for many in the community who seek a helping hand. Both The Brook’s Token and Connecticut Foodshare have gone above and beyond to provide enormous amounts of support to TSA agents in need.

“Being able to step in with emergency food support is incredibly important, but it’s also a reminder of just how many people are one disruption away from needing help. That’s why we stay ready to respond and support our community when it matters most,” Galal added.
