Hartford, May 13, 2026

The city of Hartford has been facing the issue of illegal dumping for quite some time now, with people dumping bulky items at local parks – especially Keney Park – feeling the impact.

Organizations connected to the park have been working to combat the problem, advocating for stronger enforcement and community awareness. Proposed solutions include encouraging residents to report dumping within 24 hours so law enforcement can respond quickly, as well as tightening up gate access and limiting hours to reduce the opportunity for illegal activity.

Deirdre Brickhouse, executive director of Friends of Keney Park, and Herbert Virgo, executive director of the Keney Park Sustainability Project, spoke with Reporting Hartford about the ongoing challenges and the steps being taken to preserve one of the city’s most valued green spaces.
