The North Hartford Cultural District (NHCD), an organization that promotes Black excellence, art, and culture, seeks to establish Hartford’s first state-designated cultural district. Luz Holmes-Padgett, Executive Director for the NHCD, organized the second annual Juneteenth celebration this year in conjunction with The Artists Collective on Albany Ave in Hartford. The celebration included dance, music and poetry performances, stalls by Black-owned businesses, and free food off the grill.
Holmes-Padgett’s vision to develop a venue for local artists and cultural activities has been well-received in the community. On the occasion of Juneteenth, Holmes-Padgett said, “It’s not a secret. I can say that my ancestors fought for us to even do stuff like that march…I know how essential [the NHCD] is to a national movement of preserving…the Black excellence story and culture.”
